Crinoline 2.0 -
Hameen Hurmos
Crinoline 2.0 (Hameen Hurmos in Finnish) is a participatory installation for kids and adults alike. It was first displayed in June 2024 in an abandoned electricity plant in Riihimäki, Finland. Currently the piece is available for touring internationally.
Crinoline 2.0 is an almost three-meter-high skirt inspired by mid-19th century upper class female dresses and crinolines. The installation explores themes of female agency and physical expression. It invites visitors to interact with the piece in various ways, such as swinging, climbing, and even taking a nap. Things that would have been difficult while wearing a crinoline and a corset back in the Victorian era.
Crinoline 2.0 is especially important to me as an artist because it brings children and play into the centre of attention. The installation is incomplete without children exploring it. However, it is just as much intended for adults: I believe we should more often stop and just watch children at play. And join the play ourselves.
